Instant MessagING Protokolle

Instant messaging (IM) protocols such as WhatsApp have become indispensable in the daily lives of many people. Often, private or professionally sensitive data is exchanged via IM. In contrast to traditional electronic communication protocols such as e-mail or SMS, all communication in IM is transmitted by just one single service provider. Many IM systems have been equipped with extensive security guarantees including new security properties such as “Future Secrecy”.
The aim of this research project is to investigate how far these security guarantees can be achieved, how far they are met by real-world protocols, and to focus on humans as direct users of IM protocols.
